My rating: 5 of 5 stars
In Dead Girl, people aren’t always what they seem. Sometimes, they’re not even entirely human!
With a clever premise that plays off of Stephen King’s Carrie, Dead Girl opens with Ember, a bullied teen who has unique abilities, like seeing colors related to people’s emotions and having ultra sharp hearing. Her brush with death at the hands of a nasty bully brings her closer to understanding her extraordinary background. It also plunges her into the mystery of who is hunting her and why.
Angels, demons, bullies – Dead Girl is a wild ride and like Ember, the reader isn’t sure who to trust. Kerrie Faye keeps us guessing while cheering Ember on as she learns about her supernatural abilities and faces literal and figurative demons. Ember is such a sympathetic character as she desperately tries to turn things around in high school. I enjoyed the genuine connection between her and her friends, Erick and Hallee, and how Ember discovers unexpected allies along the way.
Dead Girl has some surprising twists, and I’m excited to see how Ember’s journey continues to evolve in the next book. This was a great young adult read with fun, speculative fantasy aspects and a kickass heroine. Well done, Kerrie Faye!
