Karma Moon: Ghost Hunter is an engaging middle grade read filled with quirky characters and hilarious banter between Karma and her best friend, Mags.
When Karma’s dad lands the job of lifetime – a documentary series with Netflix – he and Karma have to pack up for spring break and head to a hotel to capture ghosts on film. Karma’s reluctance to face ghosts and her ever-present what-ifs make her a relatable main character. But it’s the chemistry between her and Mags which makes every scene a laugh-out-loud adventure.
While this book does have spooky elements, accentuated by being set at the famous Stanley Hotel, it is more of a mystery. The old-fashioned, haunted hotel, its history, and its cast of inhabitants are a perfect setting. As someone who lives an hour away from this hotel, I appreciated how it was incorporated into the story.
This is the first book I’ve read by Melissa Savage, and I’m definitely interested in reading more. I really enjoyed her humor and how she explored anxiety and grief over family upheaval while delivering a great story.
